Are your advisory committee members engaged in your work?

We always learn so much when we volunteer! In this case, we are familiar with an advisory committee that has been in existence for over a decade. Where they once played an especially active role in the organization, they are finding that today that they are in more of a "responsive" role. "Responsive" seemed like a better word than "reactive," but the reality is that the members of the advisory committee are indicating that they are less engaged than they would like to be and unsure about their role going forward.

In an upcoming meeting with the advisory committee, we will spend time talking about what the role of the advisory committee can be as it moves forward. We'll be exploring whether there is potential to play a more proactive role (as opposed to being responsive or reactive). The committee will consider questions like: "What do we think we can offer of value to the organization?" and "As we look to the future, what do we see our role being as an advisory committee and as members?"

The board will go through a similar discussion at their next meeting too. In their case, they will be asked to consider how an advisory committee might help them with their work. The advisory committee has the potential to be of tremendous benefit to the board and to the organization, but it will be important to clarify their role.

If your advisory committee seems to be drifting or showing signs that the members aren't engaged any longer (poor attendance is just one warning sign), maybe it is time to ask questions like these of your advisory committee or your board.
