About Jeff Wahlstrom

Jeff Wahlstrom brings almost 25 years of hands-on nonprofit leadership experience to his position as president and managing director of Starboard Leadership Consulting, including 12 years of development and communications work for Kimball Union Academy and Trinity College. More recently, he spent 11 years as president of the United Way of Eastern Maine. Along the way, Jeff has worked with dozens of organizations and their leaders on strategic, leadership, and management issues.
He has successfully facilitated nonprofit mergers, counseled organizations through executive director transitions, and supported the development and implementation of a wide range of strategic efforts from community assessments to board governance projects. Jeff has also developed an online board self-assessment for nonprofit boards of directors that is available through the Maine Association of Nonprofits.
In addition to Jeff’s work with nonprofit leaders and their boards, he is increasingly in demand by municipalities and their town/city councils and school boards. Municipal projects include strategic planning, school board self-assessment, leadership evaluation, and strategic projects that benefit from Jeff’s skill set. Jeff is a frequent speaker and workshop leader for the Maine Association of Nonprofits and other statewide groups, and over the years he has conducted training in a lengthy list of board governance topics, as well as grant writing, outcome measurement, nonprofit finance, fund raising and communications, and succession planning.
As a volunteer, Jeff has gained substantial experience as a member of a variety of state and local boards, including the Bangor School Committee. His board leadership includes having served as the President of the United Ways of Maine and chairing the Bangor area’s Communities for Children initiative and the Maine Philanthropy Center Board of directors. His active community service has resulted in Jeff being honored by Bangor Rotary with their Paul Harris Fellow’s award and by the Bangor YMCA for his work on behalf of youth.
A 1980 Graduate of Bates College, with an M.A.L.S degree from Dartmouth College, Jeff and his family live in Bangor, Maine.
